RIP Ian Redpath

One of my favourite cricketers from back in the day, Redpath could be the dour batsman or the free-flowing run machine.  He was also a very entertaining speaker with a wealth of great stories to tell … and without resorting to smut or profanity.

Eighty-three was a modest innings by Redders’ standards.

RIP

My fav Aus batsman, well respected and played in an era which had some of the greatest bowlers. Excellent fielder and Sheffield Shield player too.
Antique dealer by trade and a humble quiet man who as you say was  entertaining as a speaker and played clean on and off the field.
Sadly missed RIP Redders.

Yes one of my childhood favourites, along with Stackpole and Walters, they always got on with the game.

It seems like he would have been a very handy ODI player if he was around a decade later when it was in its early days and the tempo of it was much slower. 83 years is a good long life. RIP Mr. Ian Redpath.

He was a defensive batsman in the early part of his career and learned his craft playing with Bill Lawry, was only later surprisingly vs the might of the West Indies that he played with more freedom and hit the only two sixes of his test career I believe.
His strength was his ability to survive and frustrate the bowlers, John Snow the great English fiery quick really rated him and thats a big compliment as Snow was as nasty as they get.

I don’t believe so G2C - just an Aussie of English extraction who tanned up.

Dizzy Gillespie was the first indigenous player wasn't he? Scott Boland has been another. There must be a batsman somewhere surely?

There were a few first class cricketers but Dizzy was the first test cricketer.

I think Dan Christian played for Australia but he didn’t play any tests.

Yes, my point was relating to indigenous cricketers who played for Australia only. However, you are correct about Christian playing cricket for Australia but not Test matches. It didn't seem he really was in the frame for a Baggy Green either, despite a good FC record. He just didn't have the FC record needed to play test match cricket for Australia.

He also played a few ODIs as well. It's been a sadly rare thing for indigenous guys to represent our national cricket team.
