AFLW 2024 Rd 10: Carlton vs Essendon

The girls play their last game for the season on Saturday night at Carlton against the Drug Cheats (19:15).
We would not be favourites, but we could stop Essendon from getting into the finals.
We should have Vescio back from injury.

I mentioned elsewhere, but this will also be Jess Dal Pos' last game as she is retiring at the end of the season.

Sad to see Jess go, went down to help with banner last night and can say at least she'll get a good recognition on that.  Hopefully the girls can get up for her, for the end of season and for a bit of pride in downing the Dons.  They are above us on the ladder but not so much that we aren't a real chance if we come to play.  Go Blues!

Would love nothing more than flogging those turncoats who left us for the bombers.

Not much else to play for in terms of ladder position.

Jess has been a great recruit and had a solid career. Let's send her off with the chocolates

McKay and Hill late outs. We started enthusiastically but were nowhere near the standard unfortunately.

Thanks Jess 👏🏼

Take out our best 3 ball getter and we were in diabolical trouble. So it proved to be.

Was at the game. I thought our contest was good but our skills and organisation was lacking. Played seven of the top eight and we won four and lost seven. The fixture was horrendous for everyone but I think we really drew the short straw with three interstate trips with four and five day breaks made it hard for our young side. We need key position players, back and forward, and we need to develop our kicking. The players need to improve their footy IQ and be able to anticipate better as to how the plays  are going to pan out giving their team mates better options. The  season needs to be seventeen games, players and coaches need to be paid more, and the AFL needs to actually invest in women's football rather than do it because they think they have to.

Sheesh, sharp summary there, BM.

From the get-go there was an air of tokenism by the AFL. And lack of real investment.

It's a credit to the gals that their passion has driven the competition.

Economic realities bely the spend demand.

I know people are dreaming really big for women's football but the A league is a stark reminder of why you need to tread carefully.  They have a national game but it's unsustainable business model.

The only way aflw can be competitive is on the back of the men's code giving cash to them and boosting sponsorship.

They've grown too fast this will hinder it in the short term.

I've thought that soccer did the same thing.  Should have had a state comp with a champions league play off at the end.  Less travel, is cheaper, more fixtures locally means better support locally and more games to show cash across the nation.

I say this about men's soccer too by the way for anyone who thinks it's about gender.  I'm more realistic than this.  You can aspire to greatness but you can't just do it and go why isn't it great, you have to build it.  The aflw should have followed the conference model to start with if they wanted a national comp.

Stop making sense Thry, it might catch on 😇

The biggest problem seems to me that the AFL is making it up as it goes and doesn’t have a clear vision of what a successful AFLW will look like.

If I was running the show I would have persevered with the foundation clubs and delayed the introduction of expansion clubs until the State leagues were better established.  I would have also settled the timing of the season with provision for lengthening as expansion teams earned inclusion.

As for our girls season, I think they went from terrible to not bad with patches of showing something.
We have work to do but we do have a future.
Let’s go BIG !

I think that’s a fair summary.

The fixture didn’t help and and neither did injuries to critical players but we’re still missing a genuine goal kicking forward.

We probably have the best two rucks in the comp but we’re not getting much value out of Breann Moody.  More thought needs to be put into how we use Jess and Brea.  Then there’s Celine.  Does she spend the off season learning how to play as a key forward? 🤔

We’ve certainly got a lot to work with … and a few problems to solve.

Was away for the long weekend and just got around to watching this.

Disappointing end, but unsurprising one. Especially with all our a-graders out.

Not sure what happened to Bree Moody, but she had 1 disposal for the game? I'm sure i missed something, but i didn't see an injury but 86% TOG and 1 kick??

Dal Pos went out in style, almost getting a goal at the end of the game.

Need to make some big changes this off-season.
Some of our best players (non-mids) will be retiring in the next year or 2 and there isn't a whole lot coming behind them. Our best younger players are mids.

Hopefully we can get some talent in and quicksmart.
